I was on the road, hanging out in the hotel room and I saw Blue Planet on the Discovery Channel.  The episode was about a lake under the ocean and the life that it supports.  A total separate and independent ecosystem than what we would consider the norm.

This really excited me.  I had learned of the thermo vents years ago and they contained the same wonderment.  It is something about a lake under water, a coastline under water, life forms living on a underwater beach that really sparks my imagination.

I have many questions like:

Is the pool liquid methane or supersaline waters?

Does the mussels and tubeworms live off bacteria or the methane directly?

What is the bi-product of these life forms?  i.e. we breath o2 and produce co2.

Which came first? Are these species the original or are they mods to the ones we are familiar with?
